If the year was 1920, and he a factory worker, and she the daughter of an oil tycoon, they would have defied the rules of society.

In any other place, in any other time, in any other way, Tom would have loved Meg. And Meg would have loved Tom. That is the beauty and the mind-blowing magic of real love.

So, when you fall into the pages of The Red Cottage, I hope you aren’t so foolish as to imagine this was an accident. That Tom said the right things, or that Meg felt vulnerable in just the right places, and that their bond—both the first and second time—was a mere hapless stroke of luck.

My Thoughts

I was captivated by the cover of this book. I anticipated this to be a darker read and that was the case but there is hope in the end. I really love that this author doesn't hesitate to write the hard gritty things of life. Amnesia is an interesting thing to write into a plot and I didn't fully love it. I liked Meg's character and there is a lot of growth so I did appreciate that. The middle of the story felt really slow to me and I struggled to get through some of the chapters. I really wanted to love this one but I just never felt fully invested in the characters. The mystery element is fine and the ending has a couple of twists but overall this one is just okay for me. I know many others will love this book so if you enjoy a little bit darker mystery with a splash of hope you might enjoy this one!

My Thoughts

This is one of my favorite books by this author. She does a great job at portraying what was likely reality in this time period. The cover of this book makes it look like it will be a light and happy story  but it is very mysterious and heavy and gothic. Linder does not shy away from really hard things and this book is no exception. While it isn't graphic there is murder and references to rape along with a lot of anger and grief. There is a good redemption story line also that made this book have a lot more depth. I really love the characters and the mystery is well written. Overall I enjoyed this book and I recommend if you are up for a little mystery that spans continents!

Everyone has been asking me for years: “Can you see yourself in any of your characters?” I guess I’m in everything, interwoven in all of the sentences. Pieces of me are scattered in the settings. Traits and quirks and secret thoughts are dispersed into the minds and souls of my characters.But I always felt the need to say no. I don’t see myself in my characters.

Perhaps because, in the past, so many of my heroines have been so different than me. Ella Pemberton (Beneath His Silence)—outlandish and stubborn and daring, apt to speak her mind, bold in her manner and flawless in her dance. Nan Duncan (When Tomorrow Came)—injured and worrisome, voice like an angel, childishly sweet, yet too eager to please. Isabella Gresham (Garden of the Midnights)—spoiled and excitable, with raven black hair and an art for entering social circles with impeccable grace and exquisiteness.

I love them, sweet characters of mine.

But I don’t understand them. We’re too different. Like sand and sea, we meet, we touch, we sweep back and forth together but we’re of different substance.

But Eliza Ellis—rather, Eliza Gillingham—is the first character I truly resonate with. Not on purpose. In no wise did I pen her with conscious hints back to myself. But as the story progressed, I found my heart reaching out to her, settling into her.

Because she was the same.

The way she thought, the things she imagined, her forest and her pet and her stories. I comprehended what made her hurt. I understood the dream world she lived in, because I live in a dream world too.

So, if anyone asks me, “Do you see yourself in any of your characters?”, I’ll pull The Girl from the Hidden Forest from the bookshelf and hand it to them. I’ll tell them Eliza and I are like kindred spirits, that we’ve bridged a friendship between reality and fiction.

Whether you’re a reader or a writer, I hope you stumble upon a character one day that feels like you. It’s a strange and special feeling indeed.

My Thoughts

I have read all of Hannah Linder's books and this one I enjoyed more than some. The plot holds a lot of twists and turns and I think the author did a great job at setting up a unique mystery thread. There is some darkness in this story but true to life and I think it added a lot. The characters are very believable thought I did struggle with Felton for a bit because I wasn't totally sure I trusted him. Eliza overcomes huge obstacles and I thought that growth was one of the best parts of the book. I do think the author could have gone even deeper and fleshed out her character even more. I also think the book could have used a few more chapters to add some depth but the ending was satisfying as a reader all the same. 

This is an enjoyable read for those that like historical fiction with a bit of mystery!

Sometimes, the things we say we’ll never do are exactly the things we find ourselves doing.

Back when I was still wearing two braids and walking around barefoot everywhere, I told myself I would never make a speech. Never. But by the time high school graduation came along, despite a thousand firm declarations that I wouldn’t, my mother shook her head. “I think you should do it,” she said—and because mothers are usually right, I did.

Granted, I read the speech off a folded sheet of copy paper because I was too nervous to face the crowd. And my knees were jelly. And I stood off-centered on the stage instead of behind the pulpit like anyone else.

But I did it.

For the rest of my life, I’ll look back and remember what it felt like. Standing on the stage, reading my heart, hearing the sniffles and glancing up to see tears glistening in the eyes of endless people I love.

That was special. Mother was right.

Want to know another thing I said I would never do? Re-write a novel. I’ve heard the stories all my life. The author second guesses their own ability and burns their manuscript. Then, years later, they rewrite the story that echoes through the ages as a classic. Or the novelist loses their entire document to a computer crash, so with a blank page and a blinking cursor, they start anew.

I never thought that was something I could do.

I never wanted to.

If I ever lost a novel or was prompted to start over, I would abandon ship and try for a different vessel. Anyway, that’s what I told myself.

Garden of the Midnights was the story I wrote many years ago when I was younger, when I knew less about manors and England and history. I made mistakes. I broke writing rules. I did too little research and too much overwriting…but it had my soul. Somehow, it was alive. The characters breathed. The tears in their pillow, the aches in their throat, became a part of who I was and what I felt.

This was the one. The story I loved most.

But the edits and the mistakes and the problems overwhelmed me. Like the fearful girl in braids who refused to make a speech, I wanted to throw in the towel and say with even more defiance, “I will never re-write a novel. Never.”

But Mother knew what was needed. She knew the story was too much a part of me to tuck away in some drawer, forgotten and dusty, unread by anyone. So she nodded her head and said, “I think you should do it.”

I didn’t want to.

I was afraid because it wasn’t easy.

But because mothers are usually right, I did. Now, Garden of the Midnights is ready. My heart is still tangled in all the words, all the twists, all the secrets—but this time more, because the book has yet another part of me. The part that was fearful. The part that was too close to quitting. The part that finished anyway.

For the rest of my life, I’ll look back and be thankful. When someone writes me a note that they enjoyed the book, or gets a whimsical tone to their voice when they talk about a scene, or looks up from the pages with tears shimmering in their eyes.

That will be special. Mother was right.

 My Thoughts

The premise for this story line had me quite intrigued. I have read the author's previous books so I was anxious to read this one. I really liked William and his story arc that flows through the pages. The first part of the book surprised me and I was a bit confused at a few different plot points after that. I loved the setting and there is a bit of mystery which always adds to this type of novel. I really REALLY struggled with the romance part. I wanted to love them together and to cheer them on but the first part of the book ruined that for me. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone so I will just say that I just couldn't love this book like I wanted to. Perhaps if the relationship wasn't the center point of the story I might have enjoyed it more.  I think many people are going to love it to the fullest but for me it was just okay.

Love interests me. Not just in the romantic sense, but in every sense, because love is the driving emotion behind so much of what we do. It’s the heartbeat of everything. What do we have but love? Yet isn’t it the very essence of our greatest pain?

 

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense. Sometimes love has no reason. Like a tumultuous wind or a wet branch that sways in different directions, love is often petulant and aimless and powerful. But sometimes it’s soft, like a flower lifting dewy petals to the sunshine. The epitome of everything good, sweet, and true.

 

What makes love change? What makes two friends who have always been fraternal one day confess romantic affection? My Thoughts

Hannah Linder again has penned a unique historical romance that has quite a bit of mystery and darker moments. This story has a different tone than her first novel that I wasn't quite expecting. There isn't anything graphic or bad per se, it was just a bit of the darker side of poverty and the evil hearts of men.  I did love the mysterious aspect that flows throughout the book. In the first part of the book, I liked getting the back story of Nan and Heath. About half way through there is a major shift and I really struggled with Nan's character at that point. I didn't like how easily swayed she was by others and she grated on my nerves a bit. While reading about Nan, the reader also gets to read about Heath and his adventures. There is a lot happening and it seemed like a lot to mix together in one novel. I did like Gilbert, as I think he is my favorite character in this story. 

I still enjoyed most of this book though some of it seemed a bit choppy at times.

 I am eager to read Hannah Linder's next novel!
