My Thoughts

I love Liz Curtis Higgs and I was so excited to read this! This book is wonderful as expected. It would be a great study for a group or as I am doing, a personal study. She takes the verses in Proverbs and literally breaks it down a few words at a time. This I like because it makes me slow down and actually read and consider. So grab your Bible and pick up this book. It holds your attention and makes you think.

My Thoughts

Liz Curtis Higgs does it every time. I love her books! This book is fantastic. Verse by verse, Higgs breaks down the stories in the Bible starting with Mary of Bethany. My favorite part about how this book is set up is how detailed and thought provoking it is. I have read these passages in scripture numerous times. Then Liz starts breaking it down and talking about what life was really like and the culture and the dress etc. She doesn't add to the Bible and she doesn't take away. She simply states the verse and goes, okay now do you see what really just happened here? 

So good. Five stars.

My Thoughts

I really have enjoyed most everything that Liz Curtis Higgs has written. This book is wonderful! It is simple, to the point, and well organized. She states a verse, talks about it, then gives you a tip to memorize and a way for you to copy down the verse. I love this because while it sound so easy sometimes it is hard to figure out a verse to memorize. This book gives you great ideas and will keep you motivated. This would be a great book to add to a Bible study, or personal study every week. I am looking forward to using it as a personal goal.

 My Thoughts

What a wonderful book! I love the illustrations and while being simple parables for kids to understand, they have a great lesson! There is a story for each season and a farmer is included in each story. Something I noticed is how Liz Curtis Higgs explains her fall story and how it's not about Halloween or creepy things. She wanted kids to see that this time of year is not about the scary but about a new season. This is also a much bigger yet better made book than I was expecting. It's got a nice cover and is in an easy to read format for kids. This would make a great gift or just something fun for kids to read. Verses are included with each story so you can talk to your kids about the Bible stories that parallel these.

My Thoughts

I love Liz Curtis Higgs' writing. She is so talented at creating a story line or in this case explaining a story line. I have read this passage in the Bible multiple times but I always read it and just take it for granted. As if  it was totally normal for a woman to travel so far with tons of people and camels and gold and jewels and spices. As if it's no big deal as to why this whole story is even in the Bible -it's obviously in there for a reason. I think Liz Curtis Higgs does a great job at not only reading the passage and explaining the history, but also how the Queen of Sheba is an example to women. I like that she sticks to what the Bible does say and not what others have assumed. I like that the entire passage in I Kings is broken down almost word by word so that it actually makes sense. 

I loved this book.

My Review

Liz Curtis Higgs is one of my favorite "new to me" authors. Everything she writes has meaning, humor, and Biblical values. This book is about the three main women during Christ's birth and childhood. Elizabeth, Mary, and Anna. Higgs breaks each story down with Bible verses pointing out details that I have missed before. She asks questions so the reader can realize they were real women, they were people just like me and look at how God used them!

The story of Anna is my favorite because it is not one I have thought about much. She is not talked about a lot but in the few verses there is a lot to take away. As the author wrote she would have been someone to look up to. An older woman who became a widow seven years into her marriage. After that, instead of returning to her family home she stayed in the temple worshiping God and telling everyone about Him. She wanted to be His servant and lived her life in a way that pleased Him. 

Another thing I really enjoyed about this book is how Higgs started each chapter with a song-mostly Christmas songs we all know. Then she picked out one line from that song and used it to lead into her chapter. I like this because it gives me more insight to what the song actually means.  

This is a great book and perfect as you prepare for the holidays. I love the slight humor that goes along with the Biblical truth!

A Wreath of Snow Book Review

A Wreath of Snow by Liz Curtis Higgs got my attention with its cover. It's a perfectly beautiful book cover and I simply couldn't resist. This story is a Victorian Novella and a rather short read. The setting is Christmas time in 1894 Stirling Scotland. Meg Campbell and the entire Campbell family have a disagreement on Christmas Eve which leads to Meg leaving her family on Christmas Eve and taking the train home. When the train is delayed, fellow passenger, Gordon Shaw, makes his presence known to Meg. When the unexpected happens Gordon and Meg conversation leads to the past and surprising realities that both had wanted to forget.

I love the train setting and Victorian atmosphere in this story. The character of Meg Campbell is charming and I wish I could read more about her story. There is a story about forgiveness when Meg and her family have to learn how to forgive, even when the past has made the present so painful at times. I like this aspect to the story because it isn't always easy to forgive and it's even more difficult to forgive yourself after carrying a burden.

Another thing I love that Higgs did with this book is by putting sayings at the beginning of each chapter that would relate to that chapters happenings. Here are two of my favorites (I love quotes and sayings that are worth repeating):

 "A hero is a an who does what he can do." Romain Rolland

"No one knows the weight of another's burden." George Herbert

There was a disappointment with this story and that is the romance between the two obvious characters. Now I understand that this is a shorter story but there is no development of a relationship or romance hardly at all. One minute the couple are meeting and the next they want to be together forever? It all seemed too fast for me and little development between the two.

If you are looking for a fresh Christmas story I recommend this Novella.

The Girl's Still Got It Book Review

The Girl's Still Got It by Liz Curtis Higgs is a different viewpoint on the story of Ruth and Naomi. Liz takes the book of Ruth verse by verse to explain what was going on in the culture and time period to better understand the full story. She writes with a sense of humor and simplicity that it's easy to read and comprehend. She uses different examples of verses from different versions, including the Hebrew translation at times. I really liked how she took everything apart into detail. There is also a paragraph at the end of each chapter titled "Ruth in Real Life".

This book has twelve chapters but includes a ton of extra material in the back. The discussion questions and study guide were interesting to read just to complete everything read.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the story of Ruth and a sense of humor.
