The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery

57016003

 About the Book

Present Day. After tragedy plunges her into grief and unresolved anger, Sarah Ashby returns to her childhood home determined to finally follow her long-denied dream of running Old Depot Grocery alongside her mother and grandmother. But when she arrives, her mother, Rosemary, announces to her that the store is closing. Sarah and her grandmother, Glory Ann, make a pact to save the store, but Rosemary has worked her entire life to make sure her daughter never follows in her footsteps. She has her reasons--but she'll certainly never reveal the real one.

1965. Glory Ann confesses to her family that she's pregnant with her deceased fiancé's baby. Pressured into a marriage of convenience with a shopkeeper to preserve the family reputation, Glory Ann vows never to love again. But some promises are not as easily kept as she imagined.

This dual-timeline story from Amanda Cox deftly explores the complexity of a mother-daughter dynamic, the way the secrets we keep shape our lives and the lives of others, and the healing power of telling the truth. (Goodreads)

 My Thoughts

After reading Amanda’s debut novel last year I knew this story would be something special. She is fantastic at creating unique characters with authentic life scenarios.

This book is wonderful. It is dual time line (my favorite) and both story lines held me captive until the end. I really loved ALL of the characters. Usually one part of dual time line novels I like more than the other but with this book I loved it all. There are some really hard issues brought up and secrets within family that last decades. There is a great message about forgiveness, honesty, and family bonds.  Also there is lot of grief that I found to be fairly well heart wrenching. This isn’t a fluffy read by any means so be prepared to experience all the joy, sadness, and hope.

I can’t wait to read what Amanda Cox creates next!

Five Stars.

 My Thoughts

What a joy to see Melissa Gilbert in a film. This is a slow moving story line for a movie but the acting is decent and there are some heartfelt scenes. This story covers a lot from war to death to dancing and joy. I really enjoyed the quirky characters of small town America and to see two young girls grow up together amidst hardship. This is a family film but there are scenes of war (nothing too gory) and also a scene of a person who has just passed away so just view with caution if watching with kiddos. There is a unique love story between an older couple that I thought was unique and added a lot to the film.

Overall this a decent movie. It isn't one I would watch over and over but still better than a lot of movies coming out these days.

Four Stars.

Yours is the Night Review

55654580

 About the Book

Private Matthew Petticrew arrives in France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces, an arrival which a war-weary France desperately hopes will help to end the turmoil. Having faced unthinkable things on the front, he is captivated by the sound of a lullaby, sung by a voice so pure he knows he must have imagined it. But rumors sweep through the trenches like wildfire, dubbing the voice "The Angel of Argonne," a mysterious presence who leaves behind wreaths on unmarked graves and footprints in the war-pocked soil.

Raised wild in the depths of the Forest of Argonne, France, Mireilles finds her world rocked when war comes crashing into the idyllic home she has always known, taking much from her. When Matthew discovers Mireilles, three things are clear: She is alone in the world, she cannot stay, and he and his two unlikely companions might be the only ones who can get her to safety. (Goodreads)

 My Thoughts

Amanda is such a talented author that I knew this book would be fantastic. I really had no idea what to expect with the story line and I was a little surprised on where she took the characters. I loved this book but it is heart wrenching the entire way through. I loved the added details of letting the light shine in the darkness and really it made this book so much more than a typical war story. This book takes you right into the trenches of WWI and then on a journey you aren’t really expecting with some added twists that aren’t revealed until later. The romance is sweet and a wonderful friendship more than anything. The history of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was very interesting having visited at Arlington. I also think stories such as this are a good reminder of what people have survived as I truly can’t imagine. It is so important to read about the past and I appreciate authors who can take us places we wouldn’t think about otherwise. I simply couldn’t put this book down and it is one of the best of the year.

Five stars!

More from Kimberley

BRIDGE OF GOLD was a blast for me to write. Not only do I love writing dual-timeline stories, but the present-day hero and heroine are named after my daughter and her husband. Steven and Kayla in the book are fictitious, but there are a few things in the book that do mimic their real-life namesakes.

One of them is food.

My son-in-law Steven in real life is six-foot-four and active military. The man can eat. It’s amazing to me how many calories it takes just for him to survive! Then there’s my daughter, Kayla. She was an elite swimmer for many years along with her brother. I could never keep them fed when they were at the height of their swimming careers. In fact, I joked that all I did was cook and load the dishwasher during those years.

To celebrate the release of BRIDGE OF GOLD, I’m going to give out a recipe that I created almost thirty years ago. It went through many revisions the first few months as I perfected it and now you get a special treat because I do not give this recipe out. In fact, one of my dearest friends begged for it when our kids were little. I gave in but made her promise to close her eyes while she made it (LOL) and to never, ever give it to anyone else.

Enjoy! And thanks for joining us on the tour for BRIDGE OF GOLD. I hope you love it.

Kim’s Chocolate Chunk Cookies – recipe by Kimberley Woodhouse

2 cups King Arthur all-purpose flour

½ tsp. baking soda

½ tsp. kosher salt

¾ cup melted/browned butter (this is important! Don’t skip this step)

2 Tb. Hot chocolate mix

1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar

½ cup white sugar

1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk

1 – 12 ounce package mega morsels (I use Ghirardelli milk chocolate chips)

Directions: combine the first three dry ingredients and mix well. In a small saucepan on the stove, melt and brown the butter. Medium heat is recommended but you’ve got to watch it so it doesn’t burn. You want a beautiful caramel color. Set aside and allow to cool to around 100 degrees F before continuing. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Once the browned butter is cool, add the hot chocolate mix to it. Transfer to a stand mixer and blend the butter mixture with the sugar. Whip it until well combined and frothy about 2 mins. Gradually add eggs and flour mixture, beating on low just until blended. Stir in chocolate chips. Using a cookie scoop, drop heaping TB scoops 2 inches apart on parchment paper lined cookie sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 12-14 minutes, watching carefully. Allow to cool on cookie sheets for 5 minutes and then transfer to cooling racks. Enjoy!

My Thoughts

I do enjoy dual time line books so I was excited to pick up this story. I really liked the historical aspect because it takes you to the building of the Golden Gate bridge. It truly is remarkable how people built things on this grand of a scale at this point in time. I enjoyed the mystery and how it continued until the very end of the book. The modern day story ties in with it nicely but I just didn't love the present day story quite as much. I didn't love this book but this is a pretty quick read and an enjoyable split time novel.

About the Author

lori

Lori Bates Wright is an award winning author with a love for history.

Raised in New Mexico, Lori now lives in Texas with her husband of 38 years. She has two grown kids and four adorable grand boys (who leap tall buildings in a single bound!) When she’s not writing, she’s heading up small group ministries with her husband. She enjoys speaking and interacting with women of all ages.

More from Lori

Growing up, my family loved to laugh.

Some of my favorite childhood memories are centered around my grandmother’s dining room table listening in while my parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles told amazing stories. Sometimes I laughed until I’d lose my breath. Sometimes I sat quietly, taking in the bravery and perseverance shown by those who’d gone before me.

History has been a passion ever since. Couple that with an insatiable love for story and there you have the heart of what inspires me to write.

So, when it came time to brain-storm for this brand new series, I decided to take a known historical event and think about it from every angle. Beyond the recognized players, to the “what if” characters that might have played a role. And, ultimately, how such an event would have changed the course of their lives.

Thus, a star was born.

In THE SONGSTRESS, Juliana Chamberlain witnessed the assassination from her place on the stage. Because I love a little mystery and intrigue, I decided that the leading detective agency of the day would have enlisted her help in identifying the accomplices. Allen Pinkerton had been known to hire a lady detective or two, so she would be trained by the best. Her investigative skills proved helpful in bringing a quick resolution to the case.

Fast forward four years and she’s still haunted by what she saw that night. When Pinkerton again approaches her about a case involving her family in Texas, she accepts.

Being from Texas, I was so happy she did. I’ve wanted to write a story based in the Lone Star State for quite awhile. I loved visiting Georgia and the shores of England in my last series, but I have to say it was good to bring this one home. With all the rugged charm of the post-Civil War era, this book has a little more local flavor than my last three. Al-in-all, I believe my readers are in for a treat. A new cast of fun, quirky characters as we revisit a significant time in our nation.

So, here’s to new beginnings! Or as we say in Texas, “Hang on, y’all are in for a wild ride!”

Happy reading!
Lori

My Thoughts

This is the first book by this author that I have read so I wasn't totally certain what to expect. I really loved the story idea and the first part of the book had me totally wrapped up in the what was happening. I liked the point of view of being there at the assassination of Lincoln, I thought that added a nice element to the story. It also made me think about the fact that lots of people were there that night and all would have had different points of view.

The rest of the book takes us on an adventure with the Pinkerton's and a Texas Ranger whom I struggled to love. Cade is a fine hero but I expected a bit more from him and he just wasn't my favorite. The mystery is interesting but I thought the middle of the book was a tad slow. I like the Pinkerton angel and how the story wrapped up but it simply wasn't my favorite. It is a decent read but I didn't love it.

Come Back To Me

54405695. sy475

 About the Book

The ultimate cure that could heal any disease? Crazy.

That's exactly what research scientist Marian Creighton has always believed about her father's quest, even if it does stem from a desire to save her sister Ellen from the genetic disease that stole their mother from them. But when her father falls into a coma after drinking a vial of holy water believed to contain traces of residue from the Tree of Life, Marian must question all of her assumptions. He's left behind tantalizing clues that suggest he's crossed back in time. Insane. Until Marian tests his theories and finds herself in the Middle Ages during a dangerous peasant uprising.

William Durham, a valiant knight comes to Marian's rescue and offers her protection . . . as his wife. The longer Marian stays in the past, the more she cares about William. Can she ever find her father and make it back to the present to heal her sister? And when the time comes to leave, will she want to?

Bestselling author Jody Hedlund is your guide down the twisting waters of time to a volatile era of superstition, revolts, and chivalry in this suspenseful story. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts

Jody Hedlund once again writes a fantastic novel. I like time travel story ideas and I was so excited to hear she wrote such a book.

I will say that this story had a lot more romance in it than I was expecting. I do think instead of this just being fiction it needs to also be labeled romance so people are aware when they pick it up.

Hedlund always keeps her books clean but the love story is pretty much the entire plot of this book. All that being said I completely loved this book for the history, the time travel, the love story, and the well-developed characters. There are some plot holes that hopefully will be brought up again in the next book (can’t wait!) but I thought the time travel idea was so well done! It is a fun unique twist and yes, it did remind me slightly of Outlander but this is it's own story for sure. The leading man in this book, Will, is such a great character and I loved getting to read the different parts of his personality.

Once you start this book you can’t put it down. I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait for book two!

My Thoughts

I was excited to read this book because I wanted to discover new things and also remember art, music, movies, etc that I already know about. This book is not an exhaustive list of any kind but it is a fun informative almost textbook like book. I think you could add this to a homeschool class easily. There are some great pictures and I liked reading the back story to different works of art or hymns. There were some things that surprised me that I wasn't expecting but that made it all the better. If you are looking for a unique book like this I do recommend it!

 My Thoughts

I really loved the idea of this story line. The mystery and the location had me totally invested for the first few chapters. By the middle of the book I was wondering where this book was going and I was struggling with the characters. The last part of the story things moved along a bit and made the book a worthwhile read. The ending turned out to be a bit different from what I expected but not in a bad way. This was still an enjoyable story and a nice escape to a new place. I like that the cover is unique and it certainly catches the eye.

I know many people have loved this book and Roseanna M. White fans will enjoy it!

something like cancer, it is so wonderful to not only sing for them but to hold their hand and pray with
them. I want them to know that they have a friend in me. I’m not just some guy on the stage. I feel like
Christ has put me in this position because He knew I could handle the obligation, which often means

My Thoughts

Ashley Clark does an excellent job with writing dual time line stories. In this book she even took it a step further and included characters from her debut novel which was something unexpected.

I really liked this book. The main characters are fun and unique and I think I enjoyed the present day story a little more simply because of Lucy. The setting of course is wonderful and was made even more unique by buried treasure and an old house. This isn't a fast paced book by any means but it has lingered with me even after finishing the last page. My favorite part of this story is the takeaway that history does not have to repeat itself and we are not tied to continuing hatred or traditions that our ancestors had.

There is a twist at the end and a mystery that threads through the entire book. I loved the conclusion and I am eager to read the next book Ashley Clark writes!

I highly recommend either of her books!

Four Stars.
