About the Movie
Gigi & Nate is the story of Nate Gibson, a young man whose life is turned
upside down after he suffers a near-fatal illness and is left a quadriplegic. Moving
forward seems near impossible until he meets his unlikely service animal, Gigi - a
curious and intelligent capuchin monkey. Although she is trained to assist Nate with
his basic needs, Gigi helps Nate find what he needs most of all: hope.
"As much as this is about a monkey and this kid, I think it’s about overcoming difficulties and things that you think are impossible that you’ll never come back from.”
-Charlie Rowe (Nate in GIGI & NATE)

My Thoughts
I really had no idea what to expect from this film. The first part of the story was not fun to watch as it goes through the details of Nate's illness and the extreme difficulties that ensue. This movie certainly doesn't beat around the bush when it comes to the tough stuff. Anyone with medical trauma I would caution on this.
I did actually appreciate that the scenes didn't just skip to the good parts because people who live with disabilities, this is their life. It still is difficult to watch and a bit eye opening. I think this film did a great job at portraying the little day to day details of someone who simply can't take care of himself and also those who care for him. I also am intrigued that this is based on a true story! There are some funny moments where I laughed out loud. The grandma is a bit hilarious and added comic relief to a pretty serious story line. There are some things I didn't think were necessary such as some language and drinking scenes. Also, there were some scenes that seemed to drag out a bit so that did seem to make the movie a bit longer. But by the end of the film I felt like it was a heartfelt movie. It does show that there is joy in the little things in life, even if that happens to be a monkey.
I would use caution when watching this since there is some language and drinking. It is rated PG-13 for some thematic material and language.
