My Review

You have to have an open mind if topics such as this book are not your norm. I've read other reviews on the book and many people I know would bash this book without even reading it. I definitely don't agree with everything in this book. The author is telling us what worked for her and her mother and I have no doubt that it was good! No cookbook or book for that matter is the "right" book. Everyone is different so that being said- I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well organized and while I thought it was going to be a cookbook that part didn't really come until the end.
What you put into your body is important and I found it true that she also said the things that your skin soaks up are just as important. Perfumes and lotions and scents all soak into your skin so do you really want some of those things in your system? There is also a wonderful section of recipes for personal care products such as toothpaste and even mascara! I also loved the recipes that didn't have dairy or gluten, as my body can't digest them so good. Liana Werner-Gray also writes about how growing your own produce is always the best or getting things from the local market which I completely agree. Many of the topics I had read about before and were nothing new to me but I did get some good info from this book.

Five stars!

Walking Home Book Review

23291177

About the Book

Life was falling apart. Within the space of three years, Sonia Choquette had suffered the unexpected death of two close family members, seen her marriage implode, and been let down by trusted colleagues. And sympathy was not forthcoming. “You’re a world-renowned spiritual teacher and intuitive guide,” people jeered. “How could you not have seen this coming?” Having intuitive abilities didn’t make her superhuman, however. Nor did it exempt her from being wounded or suffering the pain of loss and the consequences of our all-too-human traits such as anger, resentment, and pride—traits that can lead even the best of us to stray from our spiritual path.
In order to regain her spiritual footing, Sonia turned to the age-old practice of pilgrimage and set out to walk the legendary Camino de Santiago, an 820-kilometer trek over the Pyrenees and across northern Spain. Day after day she pushed through hunger, exhaustion, and pain to reach her destination. Eventually, mortification of the flesh gave way to spiritual renewal, and she rediscovered the gifts of humility and forgiveness that she needed to repair her world.
In this riveting book, Sonia shares the intimate details of her grueling experience, as well as the unexpected moments of grace, humor, beauty, and companionship that supported her through her darkest hours. While her journey is unique, the lessons she learned—about honoring your relationships with others as well as with your own higher self, and forgiving all else—are universal. (Goodreads)

My Review

This book surprised me in a lot of ways. I wasn't sure what to expect. Sonia's life starts falling apart and she is encouraged in many ways to walk to Camino de Santiago which I had never heard about until this book. I was so intrigued about this trail which has been walked for decades. This woman decides to go it alone! The book is an actual day to day account of her journey. Every day is recorded and the reader takes the trek with her. I really enjoyed the writing and organization and how she describes her walk. It's a process as she walks through her life in about a months time.
I think this is so good for a person, to be out in nature, which she was not used to, and being alone with God. Now this journey included a lot of Catholic practices, which I honestly don't know much about. But the general idea is a good one and I really liked reading this book and getting a new perspective on someone's life.

Note: this book does have a bit of strong language in many of the chapters. Just so my usual readers are aware.

My Review

This is not a book I would typically pick up and read. But I really like reading about new ideas and thoughts so I thought this book would be insightful. I enjoyed how the book was set up. Each topic was in it's own chapter with a quote at the end. It's organized and simple. I do enjoy yoga myself though I never do the "spiritual" side of things because I don't agree with it. I do think yoga is a good exercise and a good way to calm your mind. The author had some great things to say, I agreed with many of the ideas and topics on coping with stress and de-cluttering your life- it does make a difference mentally. I think the main thing that I got out of this book is that your mind has a big effect on your physical body, which I completely agree with. I agree with the idea that you can really change things when you have to right mental attitude.
I did not agree with "believing in the universe" or "let the universe do her thing". I see the "universe" as God because that's what I believe.

In any case I really did enjoy this book and I think it had a lot of great advice.

My Review

What a great book! I had no idea how detailed and interesting this book would read. The first part of the book the author talks about health and how diets don't really work. The main thing I got from this section was nutrition and food allergies/issues. This book explained in an easy to understand context and I got a lot more from reading this book than my nutrition college class! The second part of the book is a ton of delicious recipes split up between meals/drinks and then a list to the side that shows if it's gluten free, dairy free, etc. So helpful to those of us who struggle with food allergies and issues!! Everything about this book is helpful an honest. The author talks about her personal eating and life and makes the meals and topics realistic and achievable. I do agree with the idea that diets don't work, they work for a week or two but eventually we go back to eating the food we weren't allowed to. In order to maintain weight it's a healthy lifestyle change, no just a crash diet.

If you want some healthy recipes and beneficial information on nutrition you need to read this book.
This is honestly the best nutrition book I have read.

Good-bye, Bumps! Book Review

About the Book

In Good-bye, Bumps!, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and his daughter Saje tell a remarkable story from her childhood in which she was able to overcome a physical condition in a very unique way. In the telling of this story Saje and Wayne teach children the important lesson that when something is bothering them, they can change their attitude toward it and not allow it to have power over them.
This book will help kids understand that some things about themselves can be changed and others will always be with them, but what matters is how they choose to think about these things. In addition to its valuable lesson, this charming story will remind all readers, both young and old, of what can be done with the childlike belief in what is possible. (Goodreads)

My Review

I'll be honest, the title on this book had me wondering. I thought it was an odd title, I still kind of do, but this book surprised me. For ages 4-10 I think this book speaks to all ages. The main storyline is about a girl who has bumps on her face when she is five. After waiting for them to go away for so long they really get to bothering her and she doesn't know what to do. So her dad told to look at things differently and tell her own bumps to go away- as in specifically talk to them.
While this sounds strange the point behind it is that we all have things that we let bother us and drive us crazy about ourselves. A common one is physical appearance, weight, etc. It's a constant nagging and the book is saying "Hey when something is bugging you, do something about it, whether changing what you are able or thinking about it differently."
I think every child should know that they control their own minds and how they think on things. I think the main story is great for younger kids but they might get confused, but the older they get the more things will make sense. This book is a true story that actually happened to the author and I completely believe that your mind is powerful enough to change things.

For a children's book I think this is unique and I really enjoyed it and recommend it.
