My Thoughts

So the past few years of my life I have been struggling with different food allergies and it is hard to find anything without dairy in it! Though in the past year I have noticed more things being made available in the store; but still it is hard especially when you are cooking for other people who don't have any problems. This book is great in that it shows you how to still have a great celebration without all the stuff you can't eat-yay! Not only is this a great idea book for me with cooking, but I can share it with my friends and family who I know struggle with different food issues. Great book!

Five stars.

Broth & Stock Cookbook Review

26236892

 About the Book

A cookbook from the author of the popular website The Nourished Kitchen, featuring 60 recipes for nutritious and healthy master broths, soups, stews, gravies and other dishes using poultry, meat, vegetable, and seafood broths.

Nutrient-dense bone broths are having a major moment: from the $8 per cup servings at New York "broth bars" to Kobe Bryant crediting its restorative properties for his improved athletic performance, broths are in the news and being turned to for their health properties. Jennifer McGruther is the perfect author to address this topic--a trusted authority on traditional foods who has been touting the value of broth since before it was trendy. The health benefits of broth are many: it is rich in protein, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and other trace minerals, which are easily absorbed by the body when consumed in liquid form. Bone broth has been proven to help mitigate the effects of arthritis and joint pain since it contains glucosamine, gelatin, collage, and chondroitin.Broth and Stock from the Nourished Kitchen features recipes for the broths themselves as well as soups, stews, and meat dishes that incorporate broths, and is the ideal guide for anyone interested in integrating these healthful concoctions into their daily lives simply and approachably. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts

Who knew there was a difference between broth, stock, and bone broth? Who knew you could make broth with chicken feet? If you don't know these things this book has it all! Simple broths, to yummy soups, with minimal ingredients. The only tricky part is being able to find certain items, such as chicken feet. But I might just pass on that recipe because I don't think I could do it. But really this book gives good instruction on how to make broth and stock, which I think is wonderful especially for this generation.
Four stars.

Salsas and Moles Cookbook Review

 22789254

America has a new favorite condiment: salsaAnd with good reason—a great salsa makes a big impression with just a little bite. In Salsas and Moles, award-winning chef Deborah Schneider explores a wide variety of favorites, from classic table salsas to mole and enchilada sauces, plus chunky salsas and snacks. While some people think salsa is all about heat, Schneider teases out fresh flavors from chiles, fruits, and herbs, creating authentic recipes that showcase the unique flavors of Mexico.

With serving suggestions for each salsa, and recipes for popular sauces such as Salsa Verde, Enchilada Sauce, and Mango-Habanero Salsa, any salsa lover will be able to find their perfect match. (Goodreads)

 My Thoughts

Yum!!!! This book has been way better than expected! Most books like this are huge and rather heavy but this one is more compact and easier to put on the counter when cooking. Simple and delicious recipes for any type of salsa! Everything from green salsa, mole, mango salsa, black bean salsa, or pico de gallo. The first part of the book is neat as it talks about different spices and peppers along with how to prepare them.
This would be a wonderful gift for someone or for people like me who enjoy making their own salsa!

Five stars!

(Goodreads)

My Thoughts

This is the first cookbook by Giada De Laurentiis that I have really looked at so I don't have any comparison to previous books. It was a lot larger book than I expected so be ready for many recipes! I really like the simple dishes, and the breakfast ideas. There are lots of pictures, which I love in a good cookbook, and she includes side notes on different topics.
I guess the only thing for me is there really isn't anything in this cookbook that makes it stand out from all the rest. It's a good cookbook, but it is not much different from the hundreds of others I have looked at. If you enjoy her cooking show, and Giada De Laurentiis in general, then you will love this book.

Four stars.

Here are some of my favorites: stuffed mushrooms, salsas, cheese balls, pull apart lobster rolls, dumplings, multiple ideas for deviled eggs (who knew!?), and mini crab cakes. In the back of the book is also a selection for cocktails, the cranberry sparkler looks the most delicious to me. So if you need some delicious inspiration with delightful pictures-this is the book for you! Gather Around the Amish Table Cookbook

25366196

About the Book

Straight from Amish kitchens to yours, this cookbook offers favorite family recipes and charming stories from Amish and Mennonite cooks. Bake the pecan rolls that taste best after an ice-skating party, or try the hoagies that a community sold to help an Amish family with hospital bills. Discover the cocoa cupcakes with instructions to “stir by hand” that one young cook took literally, or whip up the whoopie pies that one Amish woman took to market in her horse and buggy.

These cherished recipes speak of comforting traditions, lively communities, and strong Christian faith. Gather your family around the table to sample the nourishing fare and trademark charm of the plain people. In the words of one cookbook contributor: “Bake someone happy!” (Goodreads)

My Thoughts

Amish food is so very delicious. They use basic ingredients but make really unique dishes that I never would have even thought of. Most of the recipes have a little story to go with them. Simple instructions, such as: wrap leftover pizza in foil for kids to take to school so they can heat them up on the wood stove. This made me smile because I grew up with a wood stove. There are also instructions on how to feed 180 men for a barn raising, you have to appreciate communities such as that! Anyway the book  has given me new ideas, such as different chowders, desserts, and ways to cook potatoes.
The only thing is that there really aren't very many pictures. I realize me saying that sounds silly, but in this day and age there are A LOT of cookbooks and some make more sense to me because of the many pictures.
So this is a great book if you are looking for some yummy Amish recipes!

Five Stars.

The Earth Diet Book Review

18113674

About the Book

Beauty queen Miss Earth Australia Liana Werner-Gray got a wake-up call at the age of 21, when she was diagnosed with a precancerous tumor in her throat. Realizing that health issues were holding her back, including in her entertainment career, she decided to change her lifestyle. Through juicing and using the whole-food recipes shared in this book, Liana healed herself in only three months.      This success inspired Liana to create the Earth Diet and make information on the incredible power of plant-based and natural food available to others. She has since used her recipes to help thousands of people with cancer, diabetes, acne, addictions, obesity, and more.      When you get the essential vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients your body needs, you can’t help but feel better. In this book, you’ll find more than 100 nutrient-dense recipes that provide proper nutrition. The Earth Diet is inclusive, with recipes for every person, ranging from raw vegans to meat eaters. It also features specific guidelines for weight loss, boosting the immune system, increasing your energy, juice cleansing, and more. If you’re looking for great-tasting recipes to help you live your healthiest life ever, then this book is for you. (Goodreads)

My Review

You have to have an open mind if topics such as this book are not your norm. I've read other reviews on the book and many people I know would bash this book without even reading it. I definitely don't agree with everything in this book. The author is telling us what worked for her and her mother and I have no doubt that it was good! No cookbook or book for that matter is the "right" book. Everyone is different so that being said- I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well organized and while I thought it was going to be a cookbook that part didn't really come until the end.
What you put into your body is important and I found it true that she also said the things that your skin soaks up are just as important. Perfumes and lotions and scents all soak into your skin so do you really want some of those things in your system? There is also a wonderful section of recipes for personal care products such as toothpaste and even mascara! I also loved the recipes that didn't have dairy or gluten, as my body can't digest them so good. Liana Werner-Gray also writes about how growing your own produce is always the best or getting things from the local market which I completely agree. Many of the topics I had read about before and were nothing new to me but I did get some good info from this book.

Five stars!

The book also includes important conversion charts and offers clean substitutes for some popular unhealthy foods, making the jump to clean eating as simple as possible.

My Review

I love food. I also love the cover of this cookbook! I am always open to new ideas for meals. There are so many things you can do, I'm just not always that creative and need others to show me what to do! This book is all about clean eating. So there are a few recipes that call for protein powder ( though she does list a substitution at times). To me this also seemed like a great cookbook for a home of one or two people. There are many recipes that are "cake for one" or "dessert for one". I like this idea because then you don't end up making a bunch of goodies and eat it all. This way she shows you how to make a smaller amount that is much better for you. The pictures are great and for each recipe. I think that is pretty important this day in age and I like to see what I am making. The only thing I didn't like so much is the use of so much Stevia, which I really don't like myself. I also discovered that many of these recipes were nothing new to me. I did find some great recipes though! The book is split up into sections after the intro and clean eating topics: Breakfast Lunch, Dinner, Side Dishes, Snacks, and Desserts.
My favorites are The Best Giant Frittata, Peanut Butter Breakfast Bars, Lightened Up Salmon Cakes, and Slow Cooker Sweet and Sour Chicken. So that shows you the variety and that seems to be in each section. The organization of the book is wonderful and overall this is a good cookbook.
If you are clean eating and trying to come up with new ideas, perhaps you should check this cookbook out!

My Review

This is a new favorite cookbook of mine for many reasons. I got it in the mail surprised at how big of a book it was! There is a lot packed into this cookbook! The first part of the book is about eating healthy and clean. There is a 72 hour detox schedule you can follow and then there is a 21 day action plan where you follow the organized meal list. I like the meals because there aren't many where you have to buy weird random food items.  There are some great smoothie recipes that aren't all kale ( I've tried that and I'm not a fan).
Another great part about this book is it lists if things are dairy free, gluten free, nut free, or vegan. For me the dairy free items are really helpful and I have a lot more options on different meals from this book.
The pictures are great, there is one for each recipe so you know what you are making. The index is amazing and handy and I find this an all around usable cookbook!

I love Martha Stewart's recipes and magazine and this cookbook is just as great!

From the Kitchen of Martha Stewart Living One Pot Cookbook Review

20342487
via
About the Book

The editors of Martha Stewart Living take 30-minute meals and everyday food to the next level with one-pot meals; more than 120 innovative, comfort-food recipes make use of just a pot, a sheet pan, a skillet, a slow cooker, or a pressure cooker for meals that are delicious, satisfying, and quick to clean up, too.

MSLO's latest cookbook features something everyone wants more of: all-in-one meals. Packed with 120 gorgeous images and recipes for one-pot wonders (including their food hack for One-Pan Pasta that went viral over the summer), this cookbook helps you get in and out of the kitchen with only one vessel to clean. From chicken and vegetables that roast on the same sheet pan to skillet lasagna, baked risotto, soups, and down-home casseroles, this is the volume that gives you the biggest flavor payoff with the smallest efforts. Here, too, are a dozen recipes for one-bowl desserts that can be ready when you are. (Goodreads)

My Review

What a great cookbook! I will say this is one of my new favorites! While reading and exploring this book, it seemed like my Pinterest food page in a book! All of the meals really are pretty simple, meaning easy to do and available ingredients. Honestly, sometimes I don't want to/have time to go shopping for a bunch of random ingredients, I just want to use what I have. This book is for those meals, I have the ingredients and most only take about an hour at the most.
This book is split up into categories: Dutch oven, skillet and sauté pan, slow cooker, roasting pan and baking dish, pressure cooking, stockpot and saucepan, and desserts. On a few of the recipes the variations are split three ways, such as pork stew-here are three different recipes for pork stew. The pork stew with asparagus and peas, linguine with tomato and basil, and pork chops with bacon and cabbage are the top recipes for me!
This book has a picture for each recipe, which I really like in a cookbook.
This is a great cookbook, I can't recommend it enough! Simple one pot meals that taste yummy!

Five Stars.

Simple Thai Food Book Review

18142451
via

 About the Book

Thai takeout meets authentic, regional flavors in this collection of 100 recipes for easy, economical, and accessible Thai classics--from the rising star behind the blog  She Simmers .

Who can say no to a delicious plate of Pad Thai with Shrimp; a fresh, tangy Green Papaya Salad; golden Fried Spring Rolls; or a rich, savory Pork Toast with Cucumber Relish? Thai food is not only one of the most vibrant, wonderfully varied cuisines in the world, it also happens to be one of the tastiest, and a favorite among American eaters.

The good news is, with the right ingredients and a few basic tools and techniques, authentic Thai food is easily within reach of home cooks. Take it from Leela Punyaratabandhu, a Bangkok native and author of the popular Thai cooking blog She Simmers. In her much-anticipated debut cookbook, Leela shares her favorite recipes for classic Thai fare, including beloved family recipes, popular street food specialties, and iconic dishes from Thai restaurant menus around the world.

All of Leela’s recipes have been tested and tweaked to ensure that even the busiest cook can prepare them at home. With chapters on key ingredients and tools, base recipes, one-plate meals, classic rice accompaniments, and even Thai sweets, Simple Thai Food is a complete primer for anyone who wants to give Thai cooking a try. By the end of the book, you’ll be whipping up tom yam soup and duck red curry that will put your local takeout joint to shame. But perhaps more importantly, you’ll discover an exciting new world of Thai flavors and dishes—including Stir-Fried Chicken with Chile Jam, Leaf-Wrapped Salad Bites, and Crispy Wings with Three-Flavored Sauce—that will open your eyes to all the wonderful possibilities that real Thai cooking has to offer. (Goodreads)

My Review

I love Thai food! I was excited to get this book because I love being able to create food without going out to eat. This book is full of so many dishes that I had ever heard about, which is a good thing! There are soups, snacks, meals, fish, and even ice cream! Coconut ice cream with Jackfruit-yum!! There is also a curry powder recipe that I found helpful because I love curry! In the back of the book is a great glossary on the different ingredients for those of use who have no idea what some things are.
The only downside is there is an extreme lack of pictures. I love cookbooks but I am a visual person and pictures really add a lot. Also, it's a mixture of recipes so some are easier to make and others require effort but I don't mind in order to get the finishing product!
This is a good cookbook but they could have done better with the pictures.

My Review

What a vibrant book! This book has wonderful pictures that made me want to eat all of the food. The book is very well put together and organized in a way that makes it easy to use. I like the added stories about the family and recipes. The only downside to this book is that a lot of the food is specialty, not typical things that you would have in the kitchen. That being said, so many of these recipe's are wonderful! There are many sections but I like the bread and special occasion parts. There is one for raspberry jam and orange marmalade, stews and corned beef. These are just a few of the delicious things! I love the Irish background and unique ideas.
For a fresh Irish cookbook this one I love! It will be on my shelf and dinner plans for years to come.

Chopped Cookbook Review

18248485
via

 About the Book

Just as each basket on Chopped has many tasty possibilities, so, too, do the contents of your refrigerator. (Goodreads)

My Review

I have always enjoyed the show Chopped because I always thought it brought out a lot of creativity. Cooking is fun and should be creative and different in my opinion. I try to make different dishes to give us some variety, but we also stick to our usual basics as well. I think the thing that I struggle with when it comes to cooking and cookbooks is I can't get the ingredients listed or I can't afford to spend that much for one meal.
I figured this book would have a lot of fancy ingredients but it really doesn't. Most of the meals are made with basics just thrown together in ways I never would have thought. The skillet spaghetti casserole on page 66-great idea but I never would have thought about making it! At the beginning of the book is a "what I should have in my pantry list". This idea is in a lot of cookbooks but I like this one the most because it's the basics! Flour, sugar, butter, basil, milk, eggs, etc. It makes sense because it's what people do actually have in their pantry already. I also love pages 114-115 Getting Good Vegetables, this is a list of what to look for, how to store, and what type of vitamin is in the veggie. This can be really helpful when looking for something you don't often buy. Also, one last favorite part is on page 166-how to make your own vinaigrette and dressings. I love how easy it is to follow and simple ingredients.

That all being said, this book is really nothing like the show, it's just like any other cookbook just set up a bit differently. A few of the recipes I didn't like the set up because it was all in one big paragraph, the ingredient list wasn't there it was just thrown in with the recipe. This isn't a huge deal but I like having things separate when cooking.

I am a fan of food and this is a great book.
Five stars.

Simply Delicious Amish Cookbook Review

Simply Delicious Amish Cooking: Recipes and Stories from the Amish of Sarasota, Florida

Simply Delicious: Amish Cooking by Sherry Gore has some unique recipes that make me excited about cooking again.

Unbeknownst to many folks outside the Amish Mennonite population in America, Pinecraft, Florida---a village tucked away in the heart of Sarasota---is the vacation paradise of the Plain People. Unlike any other Plain community in the world, this village is a virtual melting pot of Amish and Mennonites from around the world, intermingled with people, like author Sherry Gore's family, who live there year-round. Gore has put together a cookbook that represents the people who make Pinecraft unique. With hundreds of easy-to-prepare recipes, 16 full-color photographs and black-and-white photographs throughout, this cookbook includes traditional favorites such as Sweet Potato Sweet Mash and Mrs. Byler's Glazed Donuts, as well as Florida favorites including Fried Alligator Nuggets, Grilled Lime Fish Fillets, and Strawberry Mango Smoothies. Interspersed with the recipes are true-life stories about births, engagements, weddings, deaths, funerals, celebrations, wildlife encounters, and accidents told through years of Sherry's Letters from Home column published in The Budget, the Amish newspaper. This delightful cookbook offers readers a faith-based, family-focused perspective of the simple way of life of the Plain People. It is truly a breath of fresh air from Sarasota, Florida! (Goodreads)

I LOVED this cookbook! I thought it was going to be hardback, but it is more of a binder recipe book, which works fine for me. There are not as many pictures as the cover portrays, there are a couple groups of pictures in the middle of the book that include the page number for the recipe. I have a ton of cookbooks, but I like this one because many of the recipes I have never heard of or thought to cook. Since this book comes from Florida there is an entire seafood section-yum! The bread section is my favorite along with the Sweet Potato Sweet Mash. Many of the recipes are created for multiple servings, since it's just the two of us I will probably cut some of them in half. With almost every page there is a story that goes along with the recipes on that page.

This cookbook makes me want to visit Florida and gives a different perspective on what the Amish like to eat-even Fried Alligator!

Highly recommend if you need some new ideas for the kitchen!
