My Thoughts

This movie is based on the memoir written by Carolyn Weber. I didn’t fully realize this until the very end of the film.

I had no idea what to expect before watching this and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The acting is really great and the setting of Oxford is just beautiful. I loved all of the architecture and the different shots of the buildings in different scenes. I was completely engrossed in the story from the start which I was worried that it could be boring and it certainly is not. There is some mild cussing and a few of the scenes show college partying but nothing graphic in my opinion. There are some references to sleeping around and shock at people being chaste and it actually creates interesting conversation in a couple scenes which I thought was good. One of the main people chooses abstinence and gets push back because of it.

Basically this film tells the story of Caro as she is confronted with different beliefs and her reaction and growth on what faith means. I enjoyed how the love of literature is portrayed and the references to different authors. I think the movie left out some details that the book better explained but it is difficult for movies to fully grasp stories like this. There is a sweet love story and it was well written and acted. The ending had a fun twist and tied up the movie nicely. Overall I really enjoyed this movie and would watch it again.

The British Booksellers Review

About the Book

Inspired by real accounts of the Forgotten Blitz bombings, The British Booksellers highlights the courage of those whose lives were forever changed by war—and the stories that bind us in the fight for what matters most.

A tenant farmer’s son had no business daring to dream of a future with an earl’s daughter, but that couldn’t keep Amos Darby from his secret friendship with Charlotte Terrington . . . until the reality of the Great War sobered youthful dreams. Now decades later, he bears the brutal scars of battles fought in the trenches and their futures that were stolen away. His return home doesn’t come with tender reunions, but with the hollow fulfillment of opening a bookshop on his own and retreating as a recluse within its walls.

When the future Earl of Harcourt chose Charlotte to be his wife, she knew she was destined for a loveless match. Though her heart had chosen another long ago, she pledges her future even as her husband goes to war. Twenty-five years later, Charlotte remains a war widow who divides her days between her late husband’s declining estate and operating a quaint Coventry bookshop—Eden Books, lovingly named after her grown daughter. And Amos is nothing more than the rival bookseller across the lane.

As war with Hitler looms, Eden is determined to preserve her father’s legacy. So when an American solicitor arrives threatening a lawsuit that could destroy everything they’ve worked so hard to preserve, mother and daughter prepare to fight back. But with devastation wrought by the Luftwaffe’s local blitz terrorizing the skies, battling bookshops—and lost loves, Amos and Charlotte—must put aside their differences and fight together to help Coventry survive.

From deep in the trenches of the Great War to the storied English countryside and the devastating Coventry Blitz of WWII, The British Booksellers explores the unbreakable bonds that unite us through love, loss, and the enduring solace that can be found between the pages of a book. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts

What is not to love with this storyline? I was so excited to read this novel and I really enjoyed it despite some of the plot points being a bit unexpected. There is a lot of dual time line back and forth so you do really have to pay attention to what you are reading. The author did a great job at this though and I didn't feel too lost. The characters are so well written and developed. I just love Amos and his journey throughout this book and he is by far my favorite. There is somewhat of a romance thread but it won't be what you expect. I love the setting and the history. I didn't know anything about the bombings in this area and so I found that to be fascinating. This is a great read for history lovers and also has a lot of depth that you expect to find in a Cambron novel. I recommend!

Four Stars.

My Thoughts

This movie is about what you would expect after watching the preview. It is silly and musical and has a major plot twist at the end that deviates from Scripture completely. I decided to watch this movie because I love musicals and I was excited to see how they did all of the songs. If you are looking for Biblical accuracy this isn't the movie for you. The creators certainly got creative on a few things, especially the last twenty minutes of the film. The general main story is carried through but there is a lot added that truthfully I didn't think was necessary. It is clear they wanted an extra dramatic element and there will be varying opinions on this film because of that. There is a lot of humorous dialog and I laughed a few times because it shows our modern view on things and how ridiculous it is such as frankincense essential oil. The singing and performances are top notch and the cast really did a good job. I don't love this movie because of how it ended (which should be the best part...) but I did enjoy the musical aspect. If I had young children watch this with me, I would be very clear with them that this is not the real history of what happened. It certainly held my attention and I enjoyed a good bit of the film.

More from Hannah

Sometimes, the things we say we’ll never do are exactly the things we find ourselves doing.

Back when I was still wearing two braids and walking around barefoot everywhere, I told myself I would never make a speech. Never. But by the time high school graduation came along, despite a thousand firm declarations that I wouldn’t, my mother shook her head. “I think you should do it,” she said—and because mothers are usually right, I did.

Granted, I read the speech off a folded sheet of copy paper because I was too nervous to face the crowd. And my knees were jelly. And I stood off-centered on the stage instead of behind the pulpit like anyone else.

But I did it.

For the rest of my life, I’ll look back and remember what it felt like. Standing on the stage, reading my heart, hearing the sniffles and glancing up to see tears glistening in the eyes of endless people I love.

That was special. Mother was right.

Want to know another thing I said I would never do? Re-write a novel. I’ve heard the stories all my life. The author second guesses their own ability and burns their manuscript. Then, years later, they rewrite the story that echoes through the ages as a classic. Or the novelist loses their entire document to a computer crash, so with a blank page and a blinking cursor, they start anew.

I never thought that was something I could do.

I never wanted to.

If I ever lost a novel or was prompted to start over, I would abandon ship and try for a different vessel. Anyway, that’s what I told myself.

Garden of the Midnights was the story I wrote many years ago when I was younger, when I knew less about manors and England and history. I made mistakes. I broke writing rules. I did too little research and too much overwriting…but it had my soul. Somehow, it was alive. The characters breathed. The tears in their pillow, the aches in their throat, became a part of who I was and what I felt.

This was the one. The story I loved most.

But the edits and the mistakes and the problems overwhelmed me. Like the fearful girl in braids who refused to make a speech, I wanted to throw in the towel and say with even more defiance, “I will never re-write a novel. Never.”

But Mother knew what was needed. She knew the story was too much a part of me to tuck away in some drawer, forgotten and dusty, unread by anyone. So she nodded her head and said, “I think you should do it.”

I didn’t want to.

I was afraid because it wasn’t easy.

But because mothers are usually right, I did. Now, Garden of the Midnights is ready. My heart is still tangled in all the words, all the twists, all the secrets—but this time more, because the book has yet another part of me. The part that was fearful. The part that was too close to quitting. The part that finished anyway.

For the rest of my life, I’ll look back and be thankful. When someone writes me a note that they enjoyed the book, or gets a whimsical tone to their voice when they talk about a scene, or looks up from the pages with tears shimmering in their eyes.

That will be special. Mother was right.

 My Thoughts

The premise for this story line had me quite intrigued. I have read the author's previous books so I was anxious to read this one. I really liked William and his story arc that flows through the pages. The first part of the book surprised me and I was a bit confused at a few different plot points after that. I loved the setting and there is a bit of mystery which always adds to this type of novel. I really REALLY struggled with the romance part. I wanted to love them together and to cheer them on but the first part of the book ruined that for me. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone so I will just say that I just couldn't love this book like I wanted to. Perhaps if the relationship wasn't the center point of the story I might have enjoyed it more.  I think many people are going to love it to the fullest but for me it was just okay.

My Thoughts

I was excited to read this story because it is the start of a new series. The cover is pretty great and it is even better when you hold the paperback copy. The font just shimmers! All that to say that I went into this book with pretty high expectations and it wasn't my favorite. I really liked the overall plot. I think that arson as murder is more unique and different from a lot of suspense novels especially as it carries through the entire book. So this book is fresh and different from that perspective. The romance side of things is what really took me out of the story. Don't get me wrong, I love romance stories. But for some reason in this story I just had a hard time buying it all. The instant love/attraction and continual reference to how each other looked was just really distracting and didn't seem to flow for me. But that is just my personal opinion. I have read most of Hannon's novels and many I have loved. The mystery side was pretty good and it wasn't as suspenseful as I would have expected but still an intriguing read. I know many will love this book!

My Thoughts

I love reading books set in Alaska and this story takes you on the path less traveled. The book starts with a bang and you can't help but turn the pages late into the night. The characters are real and interesting. The setting is terrific and the plot keeps you hooked until the last page. I really enjoyed imagining the flying over the wilderness with Trevor and Carrie. There is a romance plot thread but it wasn't the main point of the book and honestly I think it would have been good without it. The suspense was really well written and I enjoyed it immensely. I think this is the author's best book yet!

On Moonberry Lake Review

About the Book

Cora Matthews has long wondered why her mother stopped taking her to visit her grandparents' lodge in the small Northwoods Minnesota town of Moonberry Lake. Now, after burying her mother and breaking off her engagement just two weeks before her wedding, Cora has a chance to find out. Once there, she is stunned to learn that the old lodge is her inheritance--with a surprising condition attached. Maybe some time to regroup on the shores of a beautiful lake is just what Cora needs to figure out what's next for her.

But Cora's days on the lake are anything but relaxing. The only thing that's a bigger mess than her own life is the dilapidated building she's living in. Add a cantankerous handywoman, an angry neighbor, and an elderly woman who spends all her time talking to the "residents" in the cemetery and Cora's not sure she can stick it out. But if she can, she may find a love she never expected--from the most unexpected people imaginable. This homespun tale of new friendships, sweet romance, and ordinary miracles will have you wishing you could spend a summer (or a lifetime) on Moonberry Lake. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts

I just love reading debut novels and this story proves why. This book is like a breath of fresh air when it comes to fiction. It is considered contemporary romance but that isn't the main plot point which I appreciated. I loved this story for all of the quirks of a small town and the people within it. The eccentric characters are so real to life that I just grinned when a new one hopped on the page. Small towns are my favorite mostly because I am from a small town and also live in one. I love how the story shows a group of people (who might drive you crazy) but who also step up to help each other when it is needed. The author does an excellent job at writing friendship and kindness and it just warms my heart. I loved this book and I can't wait to get back to Moonberry Lake.

My Thoughts

I have read a handful of books by this author so I was excited to read her up and coming novel. It is considered to be young adult which I think holds true. The main plot point is the romance and I didn't find it to be inappropriate for teens. The book starts off with a bang and I truly had no idea what would happen. There is a lot that takes places right at the start that had me cheering. By the middle of the novel I slowly started to lose interest mostly due to the fact that I didn't love Louisa who is the main character. The best part of the story is the collective group of people who end up on a journey together. I loved the secondary characters and they add SO much to the middle of this book. Sir Charles is a decent hero and all that you would expect in such a retelling. The setting is delightful and the ending wrapped up rather quickly. It is a fluffy easy read that will take you to another world for a short time. It is not my favorite story but still an entertaining read.

Three Stars.

More from Marilyn

When I fell in love with lighthouses, I wanted to read all about them and see as many

in person as I could. Lighthouse Digest magazine was an answer to prayer. I inhaled every story in the magazine and used the information to write my lighthouse blog. https://pathwayheart.com/lighthouse/.

One blog post I wrote was about an opportunity to be a volunteer lighthouse keeper at a  lighthouse, such as the Little River Lighthouse in Cutler, Maine. When my brother read my blog post he suggested that my husband and I do it. It had never occurred to me that I could be one of those people I wrote about! My husband jumped on board the idea, so we filled out the application, along with character references and proof we could drive a boat, and we were selected! The next summer, we arrived in the tiny town of Cutler, Maine, for our 10-day stay, and  were met by the couple who arranged the lighthouse stays, who just happened to be the editors of Lighthouse Digest! I was awestruck.

They loaded us up in a boat in the harbor and took us out to the small island. We were charmed, and as a history buff, I was in heaven. The lighthouse and keepers’ house had been completely restored by a local non-profit organization which included a former Coast Guardsman who was once stationed there when the Coast Guard managed the property, as well as descendants of the last keeper family and the magazine editors.  Beforehand, the keepers’ house had been abandoned for years, and it took months of work to tear out the old and restore it to livable again. Notebooks with before and after pictures showed the extensive work they’d done.

Obviously, I could talk a long time about our experience on the island, but I’ll spare you. The point is, the story of Abigal’s Secret had its origin there, and I knew what Carson and Abby went through to restore the lighthouse property in the book.

My husband and I fell in love with Maine while we were there, so the story had to be set there among the many islands and lighthouses. Maine has the second most lighthouses in the United States (over 50). We also stayed in Bar Harbor a few days before we went to Cutler, so the town in the book is loosely based on Bar Harbor. (Cutler isn’t that big.)

And of course, being the historian that I am, I knew Abby had to be connected to the lighthouse and that she would discover how her own life was similar to her grandmother’s, who just happened to be the lighthouse keeper during World War II, another era in history that fascinates me.

 My Thoughts

I really love lighthouses and this book has a lighthouse enthusiast! Renovating a lighthouse sounds amazing and I LOVED reading bits and pieces of how that works in this book. There are many layers to the characters and I really enjoyed Carson most of all. I struggled a bit with getting fully engaged in this story aside from the lighthouse details. Abby's character grows a lot and I was pleased with the ending but this book was just okay for me. There is a mystery element that flows through the book but I wasn't completely invested in that story line either. All that to say there are some fun details sprinkled throughout the pages and overall it is a sweet story. Very fun lighthouse ideas!

Three stars.

The Blind Movie Review and Giveaway

Long before Phil Robertson was a reality TV star, he fell in love, started a

moments in Phil’s life as he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, ultimately finding redemption in an unlikely place.

My Thoughts

I will be honest and say I really didn't know anything about Phil and Kay Robertson. I knew a little bit about Duck Dynasty but that is about it. I was really surprised at this film. It is very well made. The acting is incredibly well done and the story of how God can redeem us when we turn our lives to Him is incredible. The movie starts when Phil is a small child and the viewer watches him grow up and fall in love. Then you watch as his life completely falls apart due to his own choices. This film is rated PG-13 and for good reason. There are a few cuss words, though not many, and the movie does not sugar coat Phil's spiral out of control. Some of the scenes are hard to watch but it is done in such a way that the viewer could understand the depth of despair and pain. Even more so as an example that Christ can change lives in a radical way and take you out of the darkness. There is redemption in the end and it is truly so well done! I would caution that young children probably shouldn't watch this but I highly recommend that you see this movie!

The Legacy of Longdale Manor Review

About the Book

In 2012, art historian Gwen Monroe travels to England's Lake District to appraise the paintings and antiques of an old family friend, hoping to prove herself to her prestigious grandfather. While at Longdale Manor, she becomes acquainted with David Bradley--the owner's handsome grandson--who is desperate to save the crumbling estate by turning it into a bed-and-breakfast. When Gwen stumbles upon a one-hundred-year-old journal and an intricately carved shepherd's staff similar to one in a photo of her parents, she uncovers a connection to the father she never knew.

In 1912, after her father's death, Charlotte Harper uncovers a painful family secret she can only confess to her journal. She and her family travel to the Lake District to stay on a sheep farm, hoping eventually to find a home with Charlotte's grandfather at Longdale Manor, but old wounds and bitter regrets make it a difficult challenge. As Charlotte grows closer to shepherd Ian Storey and rebuilds her shattered faith, she must decide whether she will ever trust in love again.

Two women a century apart are taken on a journey to healing, faith, and forgiveness in this heartfelt dual-time Edwardian romance from bestselling author Carrie Turansky. (Goodreads)

Oh how I have waited for another book by this author! I adore the cover of this novel and I am even more delighted by the story inside! The setting is the beautiful Lake District. I think I now need to visit as I so enjoyed it as the background. This book is a dual time line (my favorite!) and I actually think I liked the modern time a tad more. It is pretty unusual for me to prefer the modern plot over the past but Gwen and David really captured my attention. I also felt a bit a bit of a connection to Gwen because she is searching for a relative and I can relate to that situation. Of course both timelines weave together in the end in a marvelous way that I totally knew would happen but I loved it regardless. This story was a joy to read and I think many will love it!

Four Stars.
