Legacy. I don’t think many people think about legacy. At least not until they start facing the end of their lives. So, what is legacy? One definition I found is something handed down from one generation to the next. I like this definition because it can be so many things. It can be wisdom, stewardship, an example of a life lived with integrity, leaving the world a better place, peace, and even hope. Perhaps another way to say it is legacy is living with the future of the next generation in mind.

The quote up above is from the last book in my Viking-inspired fantasy series, The Nordic Wars. In Winter’s Dawn, the leaders of the Nordic people are facing two impossible choices, both that will most likely cost their nation everything. Then the end comes. Discouraged, Brighid feels all hope is lost. But Gurmund reminds her that even if they lose everything, and their people cease to be no more, it still mattered how they finished.

They would leave hope and light for the next generation.

This is how I want to live. I once told my husband that I don’t think we will ever know the legacy we leave behind, because it will be spoken about after we are gone. But the choices I make today and the life I live, will determine the ending I leave behind for others to read. I want that ending to be full of hope and light so that when the next generation faces darkness, they will remember they are not alone and those who went before them.

My Thoughts

Just like that~ a trilogy is complete. I have grown to love these characters and I really should have gone back and re-read the first two books. These must be read in order! This third book picks up right where book two left us. Brighid and Kaeden have a lot to accomplish but they are finally back in the same location with each other. There are a lot of details in this novel and leading up to the final chapter. The author adds more to this super slow burn romance and honestly it felt pretty rushed to tie up the final strings. Personally, I would have rather seen this grow more throughout the entire series because that makes a more believable love story in my mind but that is just my opinion. I still enjoyed it overall! Kaeden is my favorite in this trilogy and I really loved reading his character grow in this book. The ending is well written and makes a nice conclusion. I have really enjoyed this trilogy and highly recommend it and the Follower of the Word series by the same author.

How I Created My Viking-Inspired World

World building. One of the foundational parts of writing a fantasy novel. When I began writing the Nordic Wars series, I wanted a setting that felt like the Viking era but fit the context of the story, to recreate the feel but not copy everything exactly. For example, there are no longboats, sailing, or pillaging. But there are warriors, an emphasis on honor, and the country is in the far north. When I build a world for my books, I use the history and culture of our own world and weave it together with my imagination to create a new realm in which my novel takes place.

Here are some examples of how I built this world.

Places. The country of Nordica is set in the cold north. For inspiration, I used my own home in the Pacific Northwest and my childhood in Montana. From towering mountains to deep snow, to massive forests to valleys of green, Nordica feels like a real place because I used real places to create it.

Words. I studied Nordic words and phrases, then created my own that “sounded” like them. Some examples are the leaders of the clans are called Hjars (after the jarls of Scandinavia), Til Val (a victory shout and chant that I borrowed from the phrase “Til Valhalla” from Norse mythology), and places like Folkvar and Udenhalla (both my own creations). I also found a fantasy name-generating site that helped me craft the names of places and people.

Lastly, I studied the Viking culture itself, including food, furniture, homes, occupations, hairstyles, clothing, etc… Then I used that knowledge for my own creations or drew directly from the source. Even the smallest details were either inspired by my research or a real part of the Viking life.

In the end, when readers step into the Nordic Wars series, I want them to feel like they’ve entered a time from the past, and yet wholly different. I want them to smell the smoke from a firepit, feel the furs across a bed of hay, see the mountains, and feel the bitter cold of winter. And when they finish the book, it feels like they’ve visited a real place.

My Thoughts

The second book of a trilogy is always tricky because you know you will probably be left with a cliff hanger. I did really enjoy this part of the story and I am eager to see what happens next! Brighid really grows as a person in this one. It was delightful to see her meet new people (no spoilers!) and for Kaeden to grow in his new role. The book goes back and forth between the two and I was much more invested in what was happening with Brighid. There also seemed to be a little more on the romance side of things which I thought was fun. There are some secondary characters that show up that I wasn't expecting and they added a lot to the plot. Overall I am really enjoying this series and I highly recommend!
