My Thoughts

I was delighted to discover a Bible study for young girls. If I had these when I was younger I would have been thrilled! I am surprised at how detailed this study book actually is for this age. Many studies seem to be just "fluff" books on feelings etc. This one is not that. It is very interactive so girls can read their Bible and then break down what it means. Each section is different with fill in the blanks, space for notes, word puzzles (pertaining to the topic), etc. At the start of the book it gives a great overview on how to study your Bible which I think is well written and explained clearly. The Bible is our foundation and this book makes you really dig in and study what it says. I think this is a great study to get for the preteens in your life!

 My Thoughts

In a funny coincidence, this study happened to come out right when I was searching for any type of book on Esther. If you haven't looked, there really isn't a lot out there on Esther. Perhaps a snippet here and there or a few pages in a book full of other characters. A full in depth study on Esther is few and far between. So I was thrilled when I got this book. I wanted to teach my small group about Esther but I had to do a lot of studying on my own first. This book really has a lot of great information and has been so helpful in my study of Esther. There are so many things I didn't realize even after reading Esther many times. I like this particular study because it is literally straight out of scripture. You read the verses, there are some questions, and some thought provoking ideas that are Biblical based. I have looked up a few things to verify the accuracy and it has been spot on. There isn't a lot of "fluff" and many women's studies these days are all "fluff". This book just breaks down the story and explains what was going on historically at the time. I think this is a great personal study and a good addition if reading Esther for a small group.

 My Thoughts

This is a great study, though given the time frame to review it, I haven't completed the entire study. I love Joanna Weaver's writing and this study is a lot more in depth than I anticipated. There is the video, notes on that, then personal questions, and homework for the week. The weeks seem to vary but this is a study I am so excited about! I am always anxious to read her books and the study correlates with the book. It's also recommended reading to go along with the study each week. 

 I have led a Bible study a few times and I think the gals would really enjoy this one but they will need to be prepared to do some work! Sometimes homework is hard for people but it really is the core of getting the good out of a study. For groups or individual study.

If you haven't read Joanna Weaver, I highly recommend!

My Review

I have not seen this movie and you do not need to watch it in order to do this study. The Song has not been mentioned in the study and we are on week 4. That being said, when it came up for review I was not interested....until I saw the author. I am a huge Kyle Idleman fan! We have done most of his studies and he always has a great point to make. So I went ahead and decided that this was something that we could do. It's difficult for Chance and I to find time to do a Bible study together or find a study we enjoy. This devotional study is perfect for married couples and more in depth than other marriage studies I have done. 

Each day you read from Song of Songs and proceed to read two pages that Kyle and his wife write together. Their stories are interesting, just the right length, and create good conversation with your spouse. 

There is a question at the end of each day that has been really fun to do because it gives us an opportunity to look at our relationship and talk about things. 

I can't recommend this study enough! If you are looking for a good marriage study this one is very good. 

As I've said before, you do not have to watch the movie The Song in order to do the study.

 My Review

I really like how this study is set up. Each session starts with an overview, before questions, Bible reading, and space to take notes. After the video there is a section for group discussion, questions, and closing prayer. Many studies are set up this way but I like it because it is easy to read, follow, and understand. After the group discussion there is another section that is set up more like a homework for the week and asks more personal in depth question. Each DVD session is around ten to fifteen minutes. I think I like the main book better than the videos. The Bob Goff is animated with his talking but I didn't always agree with his ideas. He has some great points throughout the study and I think the topics will bring up a lot of discussion within a small group setting. 

We are a part of a small group study and I will be showing them this study, as we are starting a different study.

My Review

I really was not sure what to expect when this book came in the mail. Not only is the life of Jesus obviously so important but I LOVE learning about the history of that time. It would be so amazing to see the Holy Land in person but this book brought it to me. It is a smaller size, easy to fit into my purse, and perfect for daily devotions. Pictures are included, such as what an olive tree actually looks like or a manger. We read about things in the Bible but sometimes it is difficult visualizing what it actually looked like. So while you read the verses in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (these are the books discussed in each chapter) you can see a picture and read further insight on the history and culture. At the end of each chapter is a reflection section that includes more verses and questions. Now the only thing is that the pages in this book are slick so it wouldn't be easy to write in. If you plan on doing this for a study I recommend you have a notebook if you plan on writing. It is obvious Dyer has done his research and has a knowledge of the Bible, this is a great resource for a Bible study.

My Review

 This book was not at all what I expected-it was better! This book is organized into an 8 week Bible study about the names of God. Each day studies one name and at the end of the week there is a review over the past week and places to write notes. This looks like a normal book, I had no idea it would be so in depth for a great study! I have been in search for a Bible study and I love this one! My favorite day is The Jealous God- El Kannah. It's difficult to think of God as being a jealous God but how blessed are we that He loves us that much? Great insight. I highly recommend.

the god of me-final week in gods at war Bible study

The god of me was definitely a week that really hit home. This is what every idol revolves around-myself and what I want. I treasure my personal time and tend to stay at home and not talk to people.

Whichever god wins the war-wins control over us.

We often think that we are the center of the world. Why is this happening to me? Why can't my day go better? I need this. How many times do you think about yourself during the day? Is our personal success the most important thing to us? Is it not what we think about daily, do get as far ahead as we can or get a better job to make more money to get things that we want. 

Will I worship God or myself?

We learned this week about a man who was scared of God. I had personally never had this idea that God would be considered scary. I was brought up seeing God as a friend or father, not someone who is mean or awful. In turn, this man acted out in his hatred toward God. He got involved with the porn industry and started producing his own and hiring models. Over a matter of years, God put a group of people in his life to open his eyes to see how God is loving, and not someone who wants to ruin people's lives. 

The man mentioned something about how he views his past and said "I loved me a lot more than my wife". He loved himself so much that all he wanted was to make himself "happy" with porn or creating it for other people. These addictions that we have revolve around us and what we think we have to have. 

Eventually this man's life was completely changed, and while he lost everything that his money had gotten him, he felt peace and had started a relationship with Christ. 

What is it going to take to stop worshiping these false idols?

Kyle ended the study saying, "choose this day who you will serve".

Something that everyone mentioned after this god of self was how much we value our time with family or personal time. We fail to reach out to others when it's on our time or when we have a day off of work. Rest and family are important, but so is reaching out to others and being involved.

This was a really great study and even though we finished the videos, we each chose something that has become an idol in our life and decided to keep journals on what we need to work on. In order to fight a battle like this it's helpful to be held accountable, so with the journals and group meeting we will be holding each other accountable for what we need to work on.

This is a great study and I highly recommend it to everyone!

Kyle Idleman has a new DVD Bible study called Gods at War. It is a six week study that discusses idols and how anything that is in our life BEFORE God is an idol. We just started the study this week and the first video was fantastic and really makes you think.

Most people think of idols as like a little trinket that people worship or something that isn't important or maybe just an old fashioned idea. The study depicts several people who explain their idols and how something that might even be good can turn into an idol.

Kyle tied his discussion with Joshua 24. While reading the verses we realized that different versions say something different. One version says that the people would not worship other gods, my version said serve  other gods. Worship to many (myself included) always seemed to be more of like what you do in church and singing and praise. This compares worship with serving, we are to praise Him but what better honor to serve Him?

Try and think about worship as serving, it really made me think.

To conclude the study we were asked seven questions about our own idols.These questions were asked throughout the entire video as well but seemed more thought provoking at the end.

Think about it, an idol is what you live your life around. Ask yourself these questions and try to answer them.
An idol of some sort is probably the answer to these.

1. What has left you most disappointed?

2. For what do you sacrifice time and money?

3. What do you worry about?

4. Where do you go for comfort?

5. What makes you mad?

6. What do you dream of?

7. Whose encouragement means the most to you?

I will be thinking about these questions for the next week...where do I go to comfort? The answer should be the Lord but what's the truth have to say?

Living Beyond Yourself: Exploring the Fruit of the Spirit by Beth Moore

This is a Bible study that I have been apart of for the past few months with a friend and the women in her church. I have never read or seen anything by Beth Moore and have been enjoying what she teaches. Our group meets once a week but there are things you must do each day in the book. The study also has a video where Beth Moore speaks and talks about the weeks lesson. The study is made to be a ten week study but we have turned it into a twenty week study so we can discuss the certain fruit of the spirit and watch her videos.

For example lets say the week is about love so we all fill in our daily personal study and when we meet as a group we discuss that week about love. The next week we watch the video about love because we don't have time to do both in one evening.

The videos are usually around an hour long and there are pages in the book where you can fill in information as she speaks.

We are on week eight right now and it has made me think a lot. The daily study is more difficult some days simply because of time. Also, the week on patience was difficult because it made me realize why patience is a fruit of the spirit and I struggle in that area!

Would recommend this for any women's study! After this I will be looking into more book Beth has written.
